A client recently received an advertisement via email from a competitor talking up their 'guarantee' to place their customers on the front page of all major search engines without Pay Per Click. This is a huge claim so I had to see what they were doing! What I saw was so scary I couldn't believe it.
They are using a method that was wildly popular four years ago, called keyword padding. Basically, they take keywords and create invisible text that is loaded with the target keywords. Search engines see the keywords and will rank the page as being a valuable resource and return it as a front page search result. Here's the problem. Search engines don't like to be fooled. They spend millions of dollars finding and BLACKLISTING sites that employ these unethical strategies for search engine optimization. Once your domain name has been blacklisted you can't get on any search engine of value and you can't be removed from the list once you are on it.
So, if your website is using unethical techniques such as those used by this company, your website developer has in essence put a big sign on your site saying PLEASE BLACKLIST MY SITE. Here's the real kicker...this company doesn't use this unethical technique on their own website. Hum...wonder why that is?
This just goes to show that there are no short cuts. They always lead to the wrong destination.
